Get Your Domain Name

Step number one in building a website and creating your web presence is to get yourself a domain name. A domain name is the name, the web address, that you give to your website. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. A quick search of the net will locate these host. Typically it cost less than $10 per year to get and maintain the name.

When looking to see if a domain name is available it is best to simply type it into your browser and see if you get a message that says the page is not available. Some sites offer to check the availability of domain names. Unscrupulous ones then buy the names you searches for and try to sell them back to you at a higher price. You have likely seen what is called a ‘parked’ domain. This is one that someone has bought but never added content to. You may see just advertisements on the page.

Getting a name does not get a website for you, it’s just a name. Web hosting is the service you need to build and maintain your website

Choose a Web Host and Sign Up for an Account

A web host is the provider that actually maintains the information you add to your website on their computers. Most free web hosts impose advertising on your website. You must decide what the value of having a website is to you. If you are an individual who just wants to tell your story and connect with friends and family with the hopes of also attracting other activists then a free service is a fine way to go.

If you are looking to create an informative site that spreads a message and is intended to attract many visitors then you may want to go for a paid hosting service. For small hosting programs with a few e-mail accounts and more storage space than you are likely to use, an entry level account can usually be had for around $50 per year. This site you are looking at now with over 300 pages and 1000 e-mail accounts only cost about $150 per year.

Designing your Web Pages

Once you have your domain name and web host, your next step will be to design the web site itself. It used to be that you had to hire a website designer or know HTML. Now web design is so much friendlier. When selecting a web hosting service be sure to find one that offers web building or web editor is. Most of these allow you to build your site visually as though you were using a word processor.

Search Engine Optimization [SEO]

One of the key components of getting your website noticed is through search engine rankings. The techniques used to get ranked higher in search results is what is know as Search Engine Optimization. There are many aspects of SEO but there are a few that even the most novice web builder should use. Page Titles should be relevant to the content of your page. The page you are reading now is titled Building your Website and contains information about how to make a website. The first paragraph also contains the words of the title. Search engines like this.

Another thing that search engines like is new content which is added daily. This could be as simple as just a daily statement about what you have done or how you are feeling about your case or what is going on in the news. Your content should be interesting though because you want people to visit and read it.

The third way discussed here is reciprocal linking. Search Engine have what are called crawlers or spiders that go through websites looking for links to other sites. As the search engines go from site to site they look for commonality among the sites. Search engines will not like a site about vintage muscle cars linking to a site about rap music but will like a site about health tips linking to a diet center. One way we help each other is by linking to each others sites. If you mention child custody issues on your site then when we link to each other the crawlers will show that relevant sites like what is on our site and boost each of us in the search rankings.

If you are a social activist and are not writing a Blog then you are not fully using the Web to support your activism. Do a search for “Indiana Child Custody Law” and you should see many returns for Sam Hasler’s Blog. Sam was an attorney out of Anderson Indiana who had been posting for years on various legal issues. It is the wide range of legal topics and the near daily commitment that had moved Sam to being near the top of the returns on such a popular issue. You don’t have to go at it for years to get noticed though. What you need is relevant content to your cause, a relevant website to connect to and the commitment to keep adding content to both.

Now do a search for “Indiana Senate Bill 560″ and see what returns you get. Child advocates throughout the state as well as myself and others within our organization have been pushing for years to get this legislation introduced. I have also been writing about it in my blog. You may expect the top returns for a Senate Bill to be from the Indiana General Assembly or some other government entity that has large, professionally built Websites that are updated on a daily basis. Are you surprised at the results?

There are a few sites you should look at when seeking a host for your Blog. I currently use two which I have provided buttons links for below. Its tough to beat free especially if you have little or no budget for your activism and are not a full-time activist like I am. So, just jump right into this page and see what it is all about. Don’t delay in getting a Blog. Blogs are the easiest way to get messages related to your activism out there and draw people into the websites of those whose cause you are championing.
